Ravana Restaurant

Eco-friendly organic and semi-organic cuisine

Here at Ravana Garden, we believe that luxury should not come at the expense of the environment and the planet. We pioneer organic and semi-organic dining experiences, providing a comprehensive menu incorporating environmentally friendly production methods and locally sourced produce.

Most of our externally sourced produce comes from eco-friendly certified local farmers, and we bake in an open wood oven to ensure minimal energy usage too.

Our speciality is seafood, as you might expect given our location; some of it comes from Madel Harbour, situated just 200 metres from the hotel. Madel fishing is reputed to be the oldest fishing method in Sri Lanka, which our guests can experience during their stay at Ravana Garden hotel Sri Lanka.

Local Highlights

The legend of King Ravana and Ussangoda

The beautiful sandy beaches of Ussangoda are perfect for a gentle stroll, and those looking for a more challenging excursion can scale the Ussangoda Mountain, steeped in local legend and mysticism.

According to legend, King Ravana of the Mayuranga Dynasty (which ruled over Sri Lanka 5,000 years ago) frequented the coastline’s mineral-rich ultramafic Serpentine, which is reputed to restore psychic strength, clear the chakras, and stimulate the mind. Ussangoda cliff itself is also believed to be one of the landing sites of King Ravana’s “Dhadu Monara” super-aircraft.

We invite our guests to enjoy the natural beauty of Ussangoda National Park, and breathtaking views over Sri Lanka’s Southern coast from your base here at one of the best eco-friendly hotels in Sri Lanka.

Culture and Heritage

Explore Sri Lanka’s rich culture

Karambagala and Madunagala boast spectacular views from the top of the rock, where you can visit the Buddhist monk meditation center to revive yourself. The Madunagala Forest Hermitage and Meditation Centre is adjacent to Madunagala Temple in Southern Sri Lanka, from which Karambagala can also be seen.

The Madunagala Hermitage dates back to the Anuradhapura period and was founded by Sri Gnananandabhimana Mahanayake Mahimi upon his retreat into the surrounding jungle. Legend has it that when he preached at the temple, wild pigs congregated to hear him, and today the area’s natural tranquillity is interrupted only by birdsong. This naturally complements our focus on nature and sustainability, in a modern homage to the ethos of ancient Sri Lanka itself.

Wildlife and Adventure

Unmissable local eco-tourism destinations

UNESCO-designated biosphere reserve Bundala National Park is home to migratory native waterfowl, where visitors are greeted by flocks of unmissable Greater Flamingos who arrive in their thousands to cover the Bundala lagoon in a stunning array of pink.

The area hosts a wide range of plant species, as well as butterflies, reptiles, and mammals, and the sanctuary’s sleepy hamlet is the ideal viewing platform to enjoy the nocturnal native wildlife.

Kalamatiya Bird Sanctuary and the Yala National Park are among Sri Lanka’s premier eco-tourism destinations and enable you to get up close and personal with some of our most impressive native species from the Sri Lankan leopard to wild elephants and of course, a vibrant selection of tropical birds.

Boat Safaris

Harness the spirit of adventure

A Walawe River boat safari provides a once-in-a-lifetime experience encompassing both an exhilarating ride and an unmissable opportunity to view some of the native wildlife.

Enjoy a bespoke Ravana Garden signature tea experience during the two-hour journey from Ambalantota to the river mouth itself, and witness the timeless conclusion of the majestic river’s eventual journey to meet the sea.

The route itself is dotted with curious langar monkeys, white-bellied sea eagles, cormorants, and crocodiles, accompanied by a soundtrack of calling peacocks. As you travel from the height of Adam’s Peak through the dry zone and finally, to the sea, you can pick out six varieties of mangroves, seventy-two bird species, and a huge variety of native plants and animals.
